Also known as Dasht-e Lut, Persian for Emptiness Plain, the Lut Desert spans up to an area of 5,400 sq km and is bereft of wildlife and vegetation. Here the mercury rises up to 70 C (159 F) and it is hot enough to fry an egg. Lastly, the eastern part is covered with ridges of large sand dunes which makes it hard to reach. The Lut Desert in the southeast Islamic Republic of Iran takes the crown of being the hottest place on Earth. The central section is the largest part of the desert, mostly flat, covered with sand dunes, and also has the lowest altitude among the three sections. The Lut Desert (Dasht-e-Lut) in southeast Iran is one of the largest deserts in Iran, receiving < 30 mm of precipitation annually. The desert is divided into three sections: the western, central, and eastern sections. It is also known to be the world’s 25th largest desert. No wonder why the area has little to zero vegetation with almost no water. The Dasht-e Lut desert is in fact the hottest place on Earth and also the lowest place in Iran with a height of 56 meters above sea level and a temperature that reaches up to 65☌.
